Winter transforms Yellowstone into a snow-covered wonderland, with fewer crowds and incredible wildlife activity. During this retreat, we’ll focus on early morning and late afternoon light, making the most of each moment to photograph wolves moving through the valleys, otters playing in the icy rivers, and bison dusted in frost. Our journey will take us through Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs, and beyond, seeking out the park’s most photogenic scenes while allowing plenty of time with each subject to capture the perfect shot.

We will spend our time in the Northern Range of Yellowstone, searching for wolves, otters, bison, elk, foxes, moose, and more, while also capturing the stunning winter landscapes of the park. This retreat welcomes photographers of all skill levels, with instruction covering composition, technical settings, and storytelling through images. You should have a basic understanding of your camera’s settings, but most instruction will take place in the field, using each wildlife encounter as a learning opportunity to ensure everyone captures images they’re happy with.

Skyline Guest Ranch, the host location for this retreat, is tucked away just three miles east of Cooke City, along a 10-mile stretch of unplowed road that transforms into a winter wonderland. Getting to the lodge is an adventure in itself, as you’ll travel by snowcat shuttle, adding to the immersive experience of this secluded retreat. This unique journey offers a taste of true winter solitude, allowing you to fully embrace the peace and beauty of a snow-locked cabin in the stunning Beartooth Mountains. Surrounded by towering pines and untouched snowfields, Skyline Guest Ranch provides the perfect basecamp for photographers seeking inspiration, comfort, and adventure in the heart of Yellowstone’s winter landscape.

Beyond photography, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Yellowstone’s wildlife and history as the first National Park. Each day is different and unpredictable, with wildlife activity dictating our schedule. Yellowstone covers a vast area, so a significant amount of time will be spent in the car searching for wildlife. Mornings will begin with drives from Cooke City into Lamar Valley, one of the best places to spot wildlife in winter. We’ll stop whenever we encounter animals, allowing ample time to observe and photograph them.

Some of the notable wildlife events during winter include:

  • Increased wolf activity as packs become more visible against the snowy landscape.

  • The bighorn sheep rut, where rams clash in dramatic battles (ONLY DURING DECEMBER DATES).

  • Large herds of elk and bison congregating in lower elevations for easier visibility.

  • Winter bird species, including trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and pygmy owls.

We’ll also photograph Yellowstone’s unique landscapes, including the steaming terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs, where thermal activity contrasts beautifully with the frozen surroundings. Photography will be primarily road-based, though you should be comfortable walking on ice and snow for short walks along trails or boardwalks when necessary. A tripod is not required, but you are welcome to bring one if desired. Some photography will take place from inside the vehicle—such as when a fox or coyote is trotting along the roadside—but even when we step out to photograph, we will never be far from the car, ensuring a warm retreat when needed.

Back at the Ranch: Photo Reviews, Editing & Relaxation

After a full day of photography and adventure, we’ll return to Skyline Guest Ranch, a warm and welcoming retreat nestled in the snow-locked Beartooth Mountains. This secluded, cozy lodge offers the perfect place to unwind, tucked away from the crowds in a setting that feels like a true winter escape. Each evening, we’ll gather to review the day’s captures, discussing composition, lighting, and potential areas of improvement to prepare for the next day's shoot. We’ll also cover editing techniques in a hands-on workshop, helping you bring out the best in your images. Of course, no retreat at Skyline would be complete without delicious, home-cooked meals. You’ll enjoy hearty ranch-style dinners, fresh-baked treats, and warm drinks by the fire, ensuring you're fueled for the next day's adventure. On our final night, we’ll wrap up the experience with an informal presentation, sharing our favorite images and celebrating the memories we’ve captured together.
